Uniform Magnetic Properties from Lab Scale to Megawatt Systems

A persistent challenge in magnetic materials engineering is maintaining consistent properties when transitioning from laboratory samples to full-scale systems. Typically, geometric scaling introduces deviations in permeability, losses, and overall magnetic behavior.

Magment has addressed this limitation. Our proprietary magnetic concrete demonstrates size- and shape-independent magnetic performance, validated across multiple geometries and power classes—from small toroidal samples to megawatt-scale transformer cores.

We successfully produced and tested the material in two representative configurations:

  • Toroidal test cores for controlled material characterization
  • A 1 MVA solid-state transformer (SST) core manufactured as a continuous large-scale structure

This approach enables direct comparison between standardized laboratory measurements and real-world application conditions.

To ensure comparability, identical electromagnetic characterization methods were applied to both configurations:

  • Implementation of multi-stranded ribbon cable windings, including toroidal winding for the transformer core, to accurately capture bulk magnetic behavior
  • Determination of effective magnetic path length and cross-sectional area for each geometry
  • Measurement of initial permeability (µᵢ)
  • Evaluation of the loss factor (tanδ/µ) as a function of peak magnetic flux density (B)

This methodology ensures that observed differences are material-driven rather than measurement artifacts.

The measurements confirm:

  • Congruent loss-factor characteristics across all tested scales
  • No observable scaling effects on magnetic performance
  • High reproducibility and material consistency

These results demonstrate that the intrinsic properties of the material remain stable, independent of core size or geometry.

Implications for Power Systems

The scale invariance of magnetic properties provides several system-level advantages:

  • Reliable transfer of laboratory data to full-scale design
  • Reduced uncertainty and risk in high-power applications
  • Simplified engineering workflows for large magnetic components
  • Accelerated deployment of solid-state transformer technologies

Unlike conventional magnetic materials, where scaling effects must be carefully compensated, Magment’s magnetic concrete maintains consistent magnetic behavior across sizes and applications.

This capability enables a direct and predictable transition from material development to industrial-scale power systems.
