The scarcity of transformers, as highlighted last year by the CEO of Hitachi Energy, is creating a significant bottleneck for the development of critical infrastructure like data centers. The recent announcement of the STARGATE project to accelerate AI deployment in the US is also hindered by the shortage of these essential electrical devices.
Solid-State Transformers (SSTs) are a promising solution, leveraging advanced SiC semiconductors combined with state-of-the-art ferrite or nanocrystalline cores. However, these materials have inherent size limitations, restricting power per module to <200 kW. Scaling up to 1–6 MW requires numerous SiC switches, making conventional SSTs prohibitively expensive.
The challenge? Magnetic materials lag behind semiconductor advancements, and to overcome this, large transformer cores capable of operating at frequencies up to 100 kHz are essential to minimize transformer size and material demand.
Magnetizable concretes are the ideal solution, offering castable, scalable transformer cores with superior magnetic properties. Developed in collaboration with the University of the Armed Forces in Munich, our patented solutions deliver:
◾ Magnetic aggregates: densely compacted with particle sizes of up to 20 mm.
◾ Low-loss materials: Featuring our innovative MagFer™ ferrite composition for reduced core losses under pressure.
◾ Optimized mix composition: A mix of ferrites and nanocrystalline aggregates tuned for minimal losses.
◾ Co-axial transformer design: Ensuring >99% coupling for highest efficiency and electrical insulation up to 20 kV.
◾ Effective thermal management: environmentally friendly air-cooled devices designed for long-term reliability.
◾ Robust and resilient: Durable materials suited for harsh environments.
We believe these advancements will bridge the gap between magnetics and semiconductors, enabling the next generation of high-frequency transformers for data centers, renewable energies, EV charging, and beyond.
